Surf challenge for tsunami relief
Surfers have gathered in north Wales for a festival to raise money for the victims of the Asian tsunami which claimed over 300,000 lives.
On Saturday morning, surfers took part in a "Board for Life" contest at Hell's Mouth beach in Abersoch.
A beachcombing competition is running throughout the day, with prizes for those who collect the most refuse from the beach.
A temporary cinema showing surfing films is open throughout the day.
A massive screen has been erected in a hotel for the film screenings, which will include feature and unreleased surfing films from around the world.
The day, called Surf Relief North, finishes with an "apres-surf" party in the town.
The money from the contests and takings from the cinema and party will be sent to the tsunami appeal.
The Abersoch event is taking place simultaneously with similar events around the UK and is backed by the British Surf Association.
Moya Hughes, one of the event's organisers, said: "We were all moved by the tragic disaster on Boxing Day.
"Whole towns and communities were ruined in some of the poorest parts of the world.
"The damage caused could last for years and we felt compelled to support the national surf relief day.
"We thought an event like this would be appropriate because the power of surf caused the disaster and the power of surf underpins our fund raising day.
"Hopefully, we will raise enough cash to make some kind of positive impact on those communities affected by the tsunami.
"The second recent earthquake in the region highlights the dire need for long-term aid projects." SURFING ARTICLES
